Once again another fantastic psychological thriller。 I have never read any of James Patterson’s books before but if JD Barker is involved， I’m there！ Just when I thought I had it all figured out， wrong！ Excellent read！

Deze laatste auteur heeft nog niet zo veel boeken op zijn naam staan。 In Nederland leerden we hem in 2019 kennen met de “Sam Porter” trilogie waarvan Horen， zien， zwijgen het eerste deel is。 Patterson en Barker hebben de krachten gebundeld in De kustmoorden dat naar het Nederlands is vertaald door Ralph van der Aa。In De kustmoorden wordt hoofdpersoon Michael Fitzgerald erin geluisd。 Na de vondst van een lijk in zijn badkuip belt hij direct de politie。 Hij zegt het slachtoffer niet te kennen， maar de politie levert bewijs dat hij haar wel degelijk kent。 Michael kan zich daar alleen niets van herinneren。 Waarom niet？ De enige die hij blind vertrouwt is zijn zus Megan。 Tijdens hun kindertijd hebben broer en zus heel wat meegemaakt en Megan zet alles op alles om Michael vrij te pleiten。 Als er meer moorden worden gepleegd begint Megan te twijfelen aan hoe goed ze haar broer eigenlijk kent。 Detective Garrett Dobbs en FBI-agent Jessica Gimble moeten de diep begraven geheimen van de Fitzgeralds ontrafelen voor het te laat is en er nog meer slachtoffers vallen。De kustmoorden belooft een spannende thriller te worden waarin een detective en een FBI-agent in een race tegen de klok moeten samenwerken om het vele moorden een halt toe te roepen。 Het begin van het boek lost die belofte in: hoofdpersoon Michael vindt een dode vrouw in zijn badkuip， verdronken in het water vol bloed。 Hij heeft geen idee wat er is gebeurd en wie deze vrouw is。 Hij belt zijn zus en de politie voor hulp。 Vervolgens verschijnt agent Dobbs ten tonele， samen met de advocaat van Michael。 Hierna begint een kat en muisspel dat de lezer nog een korte tijd op het puntje van zijn stoel laat zitten。Dit verandert echter naarmate het verhaal vordert en agent Gimble haar opwachting maakt。 Vanaf hier wordt het boek tamelijk ingewikkeld， maar ook tamelijk tweedimensionaal。 De personages hebben weinig persoonlijkheid。 Waar je in thrillers vaak een beeld krijgt van de politiemensen， laten Patterson en Barker dit hier volkomen achterwege。 Geen enkele agent wordt uitgediept: het lijkt of niemand een verleden heeft gehad of een leven naast het werk heeft。 Waar de voortvluchtige Fitzgeralds wel een geschiedenis hebben， ontbreekt deze bij alle andere personages waardoor dit niet in balans is。 De hoeveelheid aan personages komt het verhaal eveneens niet ten goede。 Waar perspectiefwisselingen meestal een toegevoegde waarde zijn om de spanning hoog te houden， slaat dit in De kustmoorden de plank volledig mis。 Doordat het verhaal weinig body heeft， is er ook weinig spanning。 Hierdoor is het moeilijk om een perspectiefwissel te vergezellen van een cliffhanger， want deze is er simpelweg niet。 De Continue actie weet dit niet te compenseren。 Sterker nog， dit zorgt er juist voor dat het verhaal lastig leesbaar wordt。Doordat het boek bol staat van de actie is de plot vrij mager。 Er worden meerdere moorden gepleegd en de politie is altijd net te laat om Michael en Megan te pakken。 Dit houdt het hele verhaal aan waardoor het voor de lezer nauwelijks een verrassing meer is wat er staat te gebeuren。 Het verhaal is behoorlijk uit balans en onsamenhangend， het schiet alle kanten op。 Dit heeft deels te maken met het bundelen van de krachten van Patterson en Barker， deels door de dissociatieve stoornis waar de Fitzgeralds mee kampen。 Dit gegeven maakt het lastig om een klik te vormen met deze thriller omdat het vaak niet duidelijk is wie van de Fitzgeralds het voor het zeggen heeft。Twee gerenommeerde thriller auteurs die hun krachten bundelen zorgen voor hoge verwachtingen。 James Patterson en J。 D。 Barker hebben deze verwachtingen met De kustmoorden niet waargemaakt。 Het idee van dit boek is interessant， maar van de uitwerking is geen chocola te maken。 Het boek is onsamenhangend en de plot heeft weinig body。 De Kustmoorden leunt vooral op de actie waardoor de balans zoek is。 De auteurs bieden eveneens geen mogelijkheid om een klik te vormen met de personages: de politiemensen zijn niet uitgediept en lijken geen verleden of leven buiten het werk te hebben。 Hierdoor mist het verhaal spanning。 Normaliter wordt deze spanning op peil gehouden door perspectiefwisselingen。 Echter slaan deze hier de plank volledig mis。 Er is geen cliffhanger te bekennen om de spanning hoog te houden wat De Kustmoorden van James Patterson en J。D。 Barker een vrij platte， doch ingewikkelde thriller maakt。 Solo hebben beide auteurs naam voor zichzelf weten te maken， maar samenwerken is geen succes gebleken。 。。。more

4。5Después de conocer la pluma de J:D Barker en la trilogia del cuarto mono， tuve la necesidad de leer este libro， y como tal trilogia no ha defraudado， con ese mismo ritmo frenetico que no ha parado hasta el final。Michael y Megan son hermanastros， ambos adoptados por un matrimonio， Bart y Rose， los cuales son ambos psicólogos。 La trama comienza cuando Michael encuentra en su casa， el cuerpo de una mujer， en su bañera， pero Michael no conoce a esta chica， y no sabe como ha llegado hasta allí。 Pe 4。5Después de conocer la pluma de J:D Barker en la trilogia del cuarto mono， tuve la necesidad de leer este libro， y como tal trilogia no ha defraudado， con ese mismo ritmo frenetico que no ha parado hasta el final。Michael y Megan son hermanastros， ambos adoptados por un matrimonio， Bart y Rose， los cuales son ambos psicólogos。 La trama comienza cuando Michael encuentra en su casa， el cuerpo de una mujer， en su bañera， pero Michael no conoce a esta chica， y no sabe como ha llegado hasta allí。 Pero todo apunta a el， incluso la policía llega a la conclusión de que son pareja。 Ademas， la policía seguirá investigando y relacionara otra serie de asesinatos que también apuntan a Michael。Un thriller que desde el primer momento es acción y misterio， donde nada es lo que parece。 Un ritmo muy rapido， con unos capítulos tan corititos que no puedes parar de leer。 Ademas cada capitulo esta narrado desde diferente perspectivas， por lo que sabremos la historia muy completa。Los capítulos narrados por Megan， serán capítulos contados por una narración escrita， algo que da mas detalle aun， también habrá capítulos narrados por los policías encargados de la investigación， además lo de los narrados por nuestro gran protagonista， asique tendremos una historia super completa， con muchos detalles en los que todo cuenta。Es un libro que esta escrito a cuatro manos， un thriller psicológico que te tiene en tensión durante sus 600 paginas， con giros inesperados y que hasta el mismismo final no resuelve la historia。Si algo me ha fallado， quizá haya sido el epilogo… para mi gusto， lo hubiera quitado， no tengo claro si da pie a una continuación o te deja las cosas a tu imaginación… solo digo， que lo recomiendo y así opinen 。。。more

Nnnneehhh。 I just couldn’t do it。 DNF at about 50% which is over 200 pages into this monstrosity。I am over evil psychiatrists and the initial suspicion of mental illness being at play and causing a serial killer to be born。Also — way too many POV。Sigh。
